The Sudanese community in Egypt has issued an official statement addressed to Egyptian authorities and the Sudanese embassy in Cairo, reaffirming its full respect for Egypt’s sovereignty and laws.
The community said it recognises Egypt’s right to take legal action against anyone proven to have violated the law or posed a threat to public security.
However, it expressed deep concern over reports of deportations involving holders of UNHCR cards, warning that such measures could have serious humanitarian consequences.
The statement stressed that UNHCR cards grant recognised legal status under Egypt’s constitution and international agreements, particularly for refugees in vulnerable situations.
It warned that families — especially women and children — could face severe hardship if deportations were carried out without clear legal grounds.
The community called on Egyptian authorities to urgently clarify the situation, saying rumours were spreading fear and anxiety in refugee neighbourhoods.
It also criticised the Sudanese embassy in Cairo, urging it to take a stronger and more visible role in protecting Sudanese citizens.
The statement concluded that continued uncertainty over the status of UNHCR card holders was deepening suffering, disrupting daily life and fuelling fear within an already fragile community.
