Clashes between herders and farmers in Umbarambita, in Sudan’s South Kordofan state, have left one man dead and several others injured, witnesses said on Wednesday.
The violence was sparked after livestock strayed into a local agricultural project, damaging crops and inflaming long-standing tensions between neighbouring communities.
Residents had formed a small committee on Tuesday to assess the losses and look for a temporary solution. But by Wednesday morning, herders reportedly returned and drove their cattle back into the fields, reigniting the dispute.
Confrontations quickly broke out between the herders and the project’s guards and owners, escalating into deadly violence.
Witnesses said a man identified as Ismail Al-Hasab was killed in the clashes, while an unknown number of others were wounded. Some workers fled the area and hid in nearby forests as panic spread.
Local sources said a regional security committee later arrived to contain the situation and restore calm. Officials have not said what measures were taken or whether any arrests were made.
