Port Sudan turns to AfDB as health strain grows

A senior health official in Port Sudan met African Development Bank representatives on Tuesday to seek support for Sudan’s strained health system.

The talks carried urgency, as hospitals face mounting pressure and communities wait for sustained assistance beyond emergency relief.

The bank said it has allocated 70 million dollars for the next phase of strengthening health services across Sudan.

Officials reviewed the current health situation, national plans, and the ministry’s experience working with international partners and donors.

The discussions signalled a shift from short-term humanitarian aid towards long-term development projects focused on public health resilience.

Participants also examined regional initiatives on epidemic control, public health protection, and wider access to specialised treatment.

Senior emergency and international health officials attended, stressing coordination to ensure the funding delivers lasting care for Sudan’s people.
