Vaccination effort rises as measles spreads in West Darfur

An emergency measles vaccination campaign was launched on Sunday at Al-Geneina Teaching Hospital in West Darfur, led by the Health Ministry in partnership with Doctors Without Borders.

The six-day campaign is targeting children aged nine months to 15 years, as authorities race to curb the spread of a highly contagious and potentially deadly disease.

Health workers moved through crowded wards and dusty hospital courtyards, transforming the facility into the centre of the measles response.

“The injection was not painful, and now I am protected,” said eight-year-old Shaima, who arrived with her family from the Al-Safa area.

She said she decided to get vaccinated after seeing relatives and neighbours step forward, choosing medical care over fear.

West Darfur has recorded a sharp rise in infections, with around 130 measles patients admitted each week to the hospital’s isolation ward.

Officials say the campaign is a vital step towards containing the outbreak and protecting vulnerable communities from a rapidly spreading virus.
