ICRC steps up cash assistance as fighting worsens in Sudan

The International Committee of the Red Cross has delivered emergency cash assistance to more than 2,000 families in El Geneina, West Darfur.

The ICRC said the aid reached 2,431 families as fighting continues to erode daily life and basic services across the region.

In a statement, the organisation said it remains committed to supporting civilians in Sudan despite relentless conflict and mounting humanitarian pressures.

Darfur’s humanitarian situation has sharply deteriorated amid ongoing clashes between General Abdel Fattah al Burhan’s army and the Rapid Support Forces.

The violence has displaced hundreds of thousands of civilians, while shortages of food, medicine and clean drinking water deepen suffering.

The United Nations estimates more than 3.5 million displaced people in Darfur urgently need humanitarian assistance.

Women and children are particularly vulnerable, facing heightened risks of malnutrition, disease and long-term deprivation.

El Geneina has endured repeated waves of displacement, with armed attacks forcing families to flee again and again.

Many health and education facilities have closed due to insecurity and funding shortages, leaving aid as the primary lifeline.

Donors said cash assistance allows families to meet essential needs amid unsafe supply routes and blocked deliveries.

The intervention comes as international calls intensify for a ceasefire and unimpeded humanitarian access across Darfur.
