Sudanese detainee dies in Egypt

A Sudanese political coalition has accused Egyptian authorities of responsibility following the death of a Sudanese citizen inside an Egyptian detention facility, calling for an international investigation into the circumstances.

In a statement issued on Friday, the Sudan Founding Alliance announced the death of Mubarak Qamar al-Din Abu Hawa, a 67-year-old Sudanese national, while he was in police custody in Egypt, despite holding valid residency documents.

According to the alliance, Abu Hawa suffered from chronic health conditions that required regular medical treatment, which he allegedly did not receive during his detention. The statement said his repeated requests for medication were ignored, describing this as a violation of international standards governing detainee rights and access to healthcare in detention centres.

The coalition said Abu Hawa’s death was not an isolated incident, but part of a broader pattern of cases involving Sudanese nationals residing in Egypt. It argued that these incidents reflect practices that disproportionately affect Sudanese refugees and worsen their humanitarian conditions.

The alliance urged the international community to take urgent action to halt what it described as ongoing violations against Sudanese citizens in Egypt. It specifically called for an investigation overseen by the UN refugee agency into the circumstances surrounding Abu Hawa’s death, as well as similar cases.

The statement was signed by the alliance’s official spokesperson, Alaa al-Din Awad Naqd, who stressed the need to hold those responsible accountable for the conditions of detention and the procedures that preceded Abu Hawa’s death.
