Congressman slams Trump’s ‘shameful’ Sudan aid package

U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee member Gregory W. Meeks has condemned the Trump administration’s recent humanitarian aid pledge for Sudan.

The senior congressman described the financial contribution as a “shameful” response to the world’s most severe unfolding humanitarian crisis.

Meeks issued the scathing statement following a February 3rd event hosted by the United States Institute of Peace in Washington.

The United Nations currently estimates that Sudan requires approximately $6 billion to address the basic needs of its suffering population.

Washington’s pledged contribution of $200 million covers only a tiny fraction of the total resources required to stabilize the region.

Nearly 34 million people in Sudan now face dire conditions, marking the largest displacement and hunger crisis on the planet today.

Meeks characterized the American pledge as “laughably meager,” noting it represents only half of what President Trump spends on clubs.

The congressman argued the low figure represents a significant moral failure and a total abdication of traditional American global leadership.

He further asserted that the administration’s repeated cuts to foreign aid budgets have directly exacerbated the worsening humanitarian situation abroad.

Meeks emphasized that the United States possesses the necessary resources and influence to prevent further loss of life in Sudan.

The representative concluded by demanding the administration act with decisive urgency to match the true scale of the Sudanese catastrophe.
