The Civil Democratic Alliance of the Forces of the Revolution, known as “Samoud,” held a meeting on Tuesday at the headquarters of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa.
The Samoud delegation, led by Dr. Abdalla Hamdok, met with IGAD Executive Secretary Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu and members of his team to discuss the latest developments in Sudan amid the ongoing war.
In a press statement, the coalition said the meeting addressed the deteriorating situation in Sudan, with what it described as a frank and transparent discussion on ways to advance peace efforts. The talks focused on IGAD’s expected role in facilitating a comprehensive and sustainable peace process.
Both sides also discussed the organization’s role within the five-party mechanism and the importance of coordinating efforts with the Quad initiative to strengthen prospects for a political settlement that would end the conflict.
According to the statement, IGAD’s Executive Secretary reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to intensifying efforts to stop the war in Sudan and to create a conducive environment for a serious political process. He also expressed agreement with Samoud’s position that the conflict cannot be resolved militarily, emphasizing that a negotiated political solution addressing the root causes of the crisis is the only path toward lasting stability in the country.
The meeting comes as part of ongoing regional and international efforts aimed at supporting initiatives to end the war in Sudan and push forward a comprehensive political process.
