Volunteers launch drive to restore South Darfur health centres

Volunteers in South Darfur have launched a grassroots campaign to restore health centres damaged by months of conflict, as medical services across the region falter.

The initiative was formed after healthcare systems in several Darfur localities nearly collapsed, according to spokesperson Mohammed Ibrahim.

Funded entirely by donations from young Sudanese at home and abroad, the project operates without official support.

Organisers have identified urgent needs in more than 28 centres, a number expected to rise to 35, selecting facilities through a lottery to ensure transparency.

Support includes medical equipment, beds and solar power systems, with some centres serving three to four villages.

Technical and financial committees oversee implementation and spending to maintain accountability.

Secretary-General Adam Yahya Wad Al-Muqaddam said the group also plans to rehabilitate hospitals and upgrade equipment, while ambulances and in-house pharmacies remain urgent needs.

He called on humanitarian groups and authorities to strengthen medical services in affected areas.
