Hamdok calls for ceasefire as Ramadan arrives in war-torn Sudan

As Ramadan begins, Sudan’s former Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok has called on SAF chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and Rapid Support Forces leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti) to halt the war and open a path toward peace.

In a message posted on Facebook, Hamdok extended his Ramadan greetings to Muslims worldwide and to the Sudanese people in particular, saying the holy month arrives while the country is “bleeding,” but still carries the promise of relief after hardship.

He urged Sudanese to draw on Ramadan’s values as a source of patience and hope, a bridge for social solidarity, and a means to confront hate speech and rebuild an inclusive nation for all.

Hamdok appealed directly to the leadership of both General al-Burhan’s army (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces to declare a ceasefire, stressing that this Ramadan should mark a moment of transformation, courageous decision-making, and a return to a single, unified homeland.
