Burhan’s SAF admits execution of RSF prisoner in North Darfur

General al-Burhan’s army (SAF) have acknowledged the killing of a captive from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), following the circulation of a video that appears to show the execution near the town of Al-Tina in North Darfur state.

In a statement issued Monday, the RSF condemned what it described as a “heinous crime” committed by SAF personnel and allied militias, accusing them of executing an unarmed detainee. The group characterized the act as “a barbaric and criminal act that disregards human dignity, the sanctity of the holy month of Ramadan, religious values, humanitarian norms, and international humanitarian law.”

A widely shared video clip shows armed men in SAF uniform firing multiple live rounds at a prisoner whose hands and limbs appear to be bound. The footage has sparked outrage on social media and renewed concerns over violations committed during Sudan’s ongoing conflict.

In its statement, the RSF called on international human rights organizations and relevant investigative mechanisms to launch an independent inquiry into the incident. The group urged that those responsible be identified and held accountable under international humanitarian law.

“These crimes will not be subject to any statute of limitations,” the statement said. “The perpetrators will not escape accountability and will be pursued until justice is served, ensuring an end to impunity and justice for the victims of these violations.”

The Sudanese conflict, which erupted in April 2023 between the SAF and the RSF, has been marked by repeated allegations of abuses by both sides, including extrajudicial killings, arbitrary detention, and attacks on civilians.
