UN teams save 39 Sudanese trapped at sea without supplies

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees rescued 112 mostly Sudanese migrants off Libya’s western coast on Thursday.

Among them were 39 Sudanese stranded for over 24 hours after their boat’s engine failed, leaving them without food or water.

Survivors, including women and children, arrived severely dehydrated and exhausted, with some suffering chemical burns from leaking engine fuel.

Critical cases were transferred to healthcare centres in Tripoli for urgent treatment.

The rescue highlights rising migration from Sudan, where over 550,000 refugees reside in Libya as of March 2026.

Hundreds risk perilous Mediterranean crossings each month, fleeing military operations in Darfur, Khartoum, and Kordofan.

International agencies warned that human traffickers exploit Libya’s fragile security, urging safe legal pathways to prevent repeated maritime tragedies.
