Another fire swept through Sudan’s market, destroying shops

A massive fire swept through the Daraba mine market in Al-Radoum, South Darfur, destroying shops and warehouses and causing heavy material losses.

Witnesses said flames spread quickly across the market, which hosts trading and mining-related businesses, consuming a large number of goods.

Officials have yet to determine the fire’s cause, and exact damage estimates remain unclear amid ongoing chaos.

Local groups, including the Darfur Victims Advocacy Organization and the Hope and Refuge Organization, expressed concern over repeated fires in Darfur and Kordofan.

They warned such incidents worsen economic hardship for residents reliant on small-scale trade and limited income sources.

Experts pointed to flammable building materials, dry vegetation, grazing, and burning agricultural waste as factors that accelerate fire spread.

Authorities and communities were urged to adopt stricter safety measures, especially during the planting season when controlled land burning is common.

Without preventive action, the groups said, fires could escalate in areas lacking rapid emergency response.

Residents called for awareness campaigns and stricter precautions to protect livelihoods and reduce future losses.

The Daraba blaze highlights South Darfur’s vulnerability to fire disasters and underscores the urgent need for coordinated safety strategies and better emergency preparedness.
