Sudan bread price jumps 40% as four pieces now cost 1,400 pounds

Bread prices have risen again in Sudan, adding fresh pressure on families already struggling with currency collapse, market disruption and the worsening impact of the country’s war.

Local reports said a single piece of bread now costs around 350 Sudanese pounds, compared with the previous price of 1,000 pounds for four loaves.

Bakery owners attributed the increase mainly to the rising cost of flour and higher production expenses, as the collapse of the Sudanese pound continues to drive up the cost of basic goods.

The Sudanese pound has fallen to record lows against foreign currencies, with the U.S. dollar trading at around 6,000 Sudanese pounds on the parallel market amid a severe shortage of hard currency.

The latest increase has further strained households already facing dire humanitarian conditions since the war erupted in 2023, with millions of people struggling to afford food and other basic necessities.

The surge in bread prices underscores the growing pressure on Sudanese families as the country’s economic breakdown continues to feed into a deepening cost-of-living crisis.
