The United States has announced a ban on Sudanese state-owned airlines from operating in its territory under a new sanctions package and the Chemical and Biological Weapons (CBW) Act framework.
The measures also include opposition to loans and financial or technical assistance to Sudan from international financial institutions, along with export restrictions enforced through the US Commerce Department, according to DPA.
Washington said the steps are aimed at helping end Sudan’s ongoing war, urging all parties to agree to a humanitarian truce and cut external support for the conflict.
Sudan has been at war since April 2023, when fighting erupted between General Abdel Fattah al Burhan’s army and the Rapid Support Forces.
The United Nations says the conflict has triggered the world’s largest humanitarian crisis, displacing around 12 million people and leaving about half the population facing food insecurity.
In related regional developments, the US dollar has continued to decline in Egypt, while the Egyptian pound’s recovery has extended further across currency markets.
