Sudan’s Abdel Fattah al-Burhan’s army is preparing for a prolonged battle around El Obeid by deploying fighters, newly analysed satellite images show.
The images reveal a 51-kilometre network of trenches, earthen berms and defensive barriers surrounding the strategic city in North Kordofan.
A report by Yale University’s Humanities Research Laboratory says the extensive fortifications point to preparations for sustained fighting against the Rapid Support Forces.
International concern is also growing. The UN Human Rights Council has held an emergency session after warnings that up to 500,000 civilians could be affected.
