The US Commerce Department has drafted new rules to tighten export restrictions on Sudan.
The proposal would place the war-torn country in Group D-3, a category reserved for nations linked to chemical weapons use.
If adopted, the move would deny most future export licence applications.
Former diplomat Al-Sadiq Al-Maqli said the reclassification marks a dangerous escalation for Sudan.
The restrictions follow a US finding that General Abdel Fattah al Burhan’s army used prohibited biological or chemical weapons.
The measures could deepen Sudan’s economic crisis, further disrupt trade and increase its diplomatic isolation.
The export controls come alongside sanctions targeting Sudan’s finance minister as international leaders weigh a peacekeeping mission.
