The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have arrested the head of East Darfur’s civil administration, Mohamed Idris Khater, over allegations of financial and administrative misconduct, according to local sources.
Khater, who was appointed by the RSF to lead the state’s civil administration in September 2024, is accused of involvement in financial irregularities and the unauthorized disposal of public land.
Sources told Darfur24 that investigations had focused on allegations including the allocation of public squares and cemetery land without legal approval, as well as a controversial decision to convert the Al-Zariba parking area in Al-Daein market into commercial units.
Other sources said Khater had been summoned to Nyala, the main administrative centre of the Sudan Founding Alliance, or TASIS, following mounting public anger over the allegations.
The sources described the move as part of an effort to address administrative failures and improve the management of public services in East Darfur.
Khater’s arrest follows days of protests and public criticism in Al-Daein over plans to allocate the Al-Zariba parking area for commercial development.
Several activists were detained after opposing the decision and accusing influential figures of attempting to take control of the public facility.
The case is the latest involving senior RSF-appointed civilian officials in Darfur. In July, the RSF arrested South Darfur civil administration chief Youssef Idris amid reported political disputes with influential figures within the TASIS coalition.
