US President Donald Trump on Tuesday called on Iran to immediately halt the execution of protesters, describing the situation in the country as a humanitarian crisis.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump accused Iran’s leadership of failing to pay large parts of the military while continuing to kill people linked to anti-government demonstrations.
“The crumbling Islamic Republic of Iran is not paying much of its military, while at the same time killing protesters, even when they are not protesting,” Trump wrote.
He added that the situation represented “a humanitarian crisis of enormous proportions” and said it “must stop immediately.”
Iranian authorities have carried out hundreds of executions since widespread protests began late last year, drawing condemnation from international governments and human rights organisations.
The Abdorrahman Boroumand Center has documented 901 executions during the first seven months of 2026, including 56 people executed on political or national security-related charges and 98 members of ethnic minorities.
The figures come amid a broader rise in the use of capital punishment in Iran in recent years.
Trump’s remarks followed comments on Monday in which he said Iran was “completely collapsing,” shortly before his administration announced details of a new package of economic sanctions targeting Tehran.
Washington has sharply increased economic pressure on Iran, including measures aimed at restricting its energy exports, financial transactions and commercial links with foreign partners.
