Three young men in their twenties drowned in Wadi Domaya, west of Nyala in South Darfur, on Thursday, according to local residents.
A relative of one of the victims told local Sudanese media outlet Darfur24 that the three men, including al-Tayeb Ibrahim, worked as drinking-water vendors and had travelled to Domaya to collect water for sale in residential neighbourhoods.
The source said the men entered Wadi Domaya, an extension of Nyala’s well-known Wadi Barli, to swim but disappeared beneath the water minutes later.
People gathered along the banks launched a search and recovered the bodies of two victims. The third body had not been found at the time of reporting.
Nyala records drowning deaths in its seasonal waterways during nearly every rainy season, amid criticism that local authorities have failed to introduce adequate safety measures.
Five people, including children, died in similar incidents in the city’s waterways during last year’s rainy season.
