UAE backs US call for immediate Sudan truce

The United Arab Emirates on Wednesday welcomed a US statement calling for an immediate humanitarian truce in Sudan without preconditions and a comprehensive political process leading to civilian rule.

UAE Minister of State Sheikh Shakhboot bin Nahyan Al Nahyan said Abu Dhabi supported Washington’s latest efforts to end Sudan’s war and would continue working with international partners toward a political settlement.

According to the official Emirates News Agency, WAM, Sheikh Shakhboot praised US President Donald Trump’s role in efforts aimed at preventing further fragmentation, extremism and deterioration of Sudan’s humanitarian crisis.

He also welcomed efforts by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Massad Boulos, the US president’s senior adviser for Arab and African affairs, to push the warring parties toward an end to hostilities and create conditions for a political solution.

The Emirati minister said the UAE would continue supporting international initiatives aimed at ending the conflict and alleviating the suffering of Sudanese civilians.

Sheikh Shakhboot also called for the United Nations arms embargo on Sudan to be expanded to cover the entire country, saying such a measure was necessary to curb hostilities and strengthen civilian protection.

The existing UN arms embargo is centred on Darfur, and proposals to widen restrictions have featured in international debate over efforts to limit the flow of weapons into Sudan’s conflict.

The UAE statement follows renewed US diplomatic efforts focused on securing an immediate humanitarian truce and establishing a political process intended to lead to a civilian government.
