US President Donald Trump said on Monday that Washington would emerge victorious from its war with Iran “very soon”, predicting a sharp decline in gasoline prices as American officials held fresh discussions with mediators seeking to end the conflict.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump expressed confidence that the United States was approaching victory, although he did not provide a timetable for ending the fighting.
“We’re going to win, as far as I’m concerned, it’s going to be one way or the other,” Trump said. “It’s going to go pretty quickly.”
The president also predicted that gasoline prices would fall sharply once the war ended, linking relief for American consumers to a resolution of the conflict that has disrupted energy supplies and driven up global oil prices.
Trump reiterated that Iran would not be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon, maintaining the administration’s central justification for its military campaign.
The comments came after Trump rejected an Iranian peace proposal over the weekend that included reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil shipments. The rejection sent crude prices higher on Monday, underscoring the economic consequences of the prolonged conflict.
Trump said American officials had spoken with mediators on Monday, suggesting diplomatic contacts were continuing despite the failure to reach an agreement.
However, Tehran has said it has no plans to negotiate with Washington, highlighting the uncertainty surrounding efforts to secure a settlement.
Separately, Trump described his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping as highly respectful, as Washington and Beijing continued discussions against the backdrop of the Iran conflict and broader tensions between the two countries.
