US imposes ‘Steel Wall’ blockade on Iran, Trump says

US President Donald Trump speaks at a campaign rally in Alabama as he says the war with Iran will end soon and predicts oil prices will fall afterward

US President Donald Trump said early Saturday that oil prices would fall once the United States’ war with Iran ends, while describing Washington’s months-long naval blockade of the country as a “steel wall.”

Speaking at a campaign event in Alabama, Trump said the economic cost of the conflict was small compared with the risk of Iran obtaining a nuclear weapon.

“We are paying a small price compared with the price we would pay if Iran got a nuclear weapon,” Trump said.

He predicted that the war would end soon and insisted Tehran would never be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons.

“The war with Iran will end very soon, and Tehran will never have a nuclear weapon,” he said. “Part of our problem is that I don’t know who I’m dealing with in Iran because there is nobody who wants to lead.”

Trump also referred to the US naval blockade imposed on Iran and its ports in recent months, saying Washington had begun calling the operation the “Steel Wall.”

“We now call the blockade imposed on Iran the Steel Wall,” he said.

The US president also said Washington would soon replenish the country’s Strategic Petroleum Reserve.

“We will very soon fill our strategic reserves, at no cost,” Trump said, without providing further details.

Trump added that he expected oil prices to decline once the conflict with Iran comes to an end.
