Protesters blocked a main road in Port Sudan on Sunday after the dismembered body of a local tea seller was discovered near a hospital, demanding that authorities identify and arrest those responsible.
Residents gathered near the city’s Accident Hospital and closed the road to traffic, burning tyres and accusing police of failing to adequately investigate the killing.
Local Sudanese media reported that the victim, who worked as a tea seller, was found west of the hospital with his body dismembered.
Relatives and protesters refused to receive the body from the morgue until authorities made progress in identifying those responsible.
Witnesses said the circumstances surrounding the killing and its motive remained unclear.
Authorities were reported to have opened an investigation, although police had not issued a detailed public statement on the case at the time of publication.
The killing triggered anger among residents of Port Sudan, the Red Sea city that has served as the administrative centre of Sudan’s army-aligned authorities since the war began in April 2023.
Protesters called on security agencies to urgently identify the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
Port Sudan’s population has increased sharply since the outbreak of the war as government institutions, businesses and large numbers of displaced people relocated from Khartoum and other conflict-affected areas.
