The Sudan Doctors’ Union has called for the immediate release of Dr Mubarak Bashara Ahmed, a physician at Geneina Hospital in West Darfur who it says has been detained by Rapid Support Forces intelligence since September 26.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the union said Bashara, a general practitioner at the hospital, was taken from his home in Geneina by an armed group affiliated with the RSF.
The union held the RSF fully responsible for the doctor’s safety and demanded his immediate release.
It also urged the RSF to end what it described as pressure and restrictions targeting doctors, health facilities and other parts of Sudan’s healthcare system.
The union warned that interference with medical workers and facilities was worsening the impact of the war on civilians at a time when health services across the country are already under severe strain.
It appealed to the International Committee of the Red Cross and other relevant international organisations to intervene and help secure Bashara’s release.
