Sudan’s official gold export revenues climbed to a record $2.29 billion during the first nine months of 2026, as production and government income from the mining sector exceeded annual targets, the country’s state mining regulator said.

The Sudanese Mineral Resources Company (SMRC) said gold export earnings reached $2.292 billion between January and September, while domestic revenues from the sector rose to 1.886 trillion Sudanese pounds.

According to the company, domestic mining revenues were 31% above projected targets, while total gold production had already reached 105% of the target set for the whole of 2026.

The figures were announced following an SMRC executive board meeting in Khartoum reviewing the sector’s performance.

SMRC Managing Director Mohamed Taher Omer praised workers and companies operating in the mining sector and called for further digitalisation, improved oversight and stronger safety standards.

Gold remains one of Sudan’s most important sources of foreign currency, particularly as the country struggles with the economic impact of the ongoing war and the collapse of several other sources of state revenue.

Authorities have repeatedly sought to bring more gold trading and exports into official channels in an effort to reduce smuggling and increase foreign-currency earnings.

Minerals Minister Nour al-Daem Taha said in August that official gold exports during the first six months of 2026 had already matched the total amount officially exported throughout 2025.

Sudan produced an estimated 70 metric tonnes of gold in 2025, but only around 14 tonnes were recorded by the central bank as official exports.

The large gap between production and recorded exports has long highlighted the scale of illicit gold trading and cross-border smuggling, which has deprived the country of substantial revenues.
