Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has announced plans to unveil what it claims will be its most powerful bomb yet, escalating its military rhetoric amid renewed threats of possible US strikes.
Brigadier General Hossein Mohebbi, spokesman for the IRGC, said Tehran was preparing to reveal a weapon dubbed the “father of all bombs,” in an apparent response to Washington’s powerful GBU-43/B bomb, commonly known as the “mother of all bombs.”
Speaking to Iranian media, Mohebbi said the United States had previously deployed its massive conventional bomb, while Iran was now preparing to introduce a weapon that would represent a new challenge to its adversaries.
The Iranian commander also claimed that the country’s missile capabilities had improved significantly, citing advances in range, accuracy and destructive power.
However, he provided no technical specifications, evidence of the weapon’s capabilities or timetable for its unveiling.
Mohebbi said Iran was also adjusting its military doctrine, placing greater emphasis on asymmetric warfare as part of a broader strategy to strengthen deterrence against potential military threats.
The announcement follows renewed speculation about the possible use of the American GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast bomb against Iranian targets.
The US weapon, weighing approximately 9.8 tonnes, is among the largest conventional bombs in Washington’s arsenal. It was first used in combat in Afghanistan in April 2017 against an ISIS tunnel complex.
Iran’s latest claims come amid heightened tensions with Washington and Israel, as Tehran seeks to demonstrate its military capabilities and warn against further attacks.
There has been no independent confirmation of the existence, specifications or destructive potential of the weapon described by the IRGC.
