S. Africa investigating whether 2 of its citizens were killed in Israel

South Africa’s government is verifying information provided by the Israeli embassy indicating that two of its citizens may have lost their lives in attacks carried out by Hamas, as confirmed by a spokesperson on Friday.

The assaults by Hamas have resulted in the deaths of over 1,300 individuals and have sparked several days of retaliatory actions by Israel’s military, leading to the loss of more than 1,500 Palestinian lives.

“We are currently verifying this,” stated Clayson Monyela, the spokesperson for South Africa’s department of international relations and cooperation, in response to inquiries regarding a local news report suggesting that two South Africans had lost their lives since the escalation of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict last weekend.

Monyela noted that the information originated from a post on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, made by the Israeli embassy in Pretoria. He further acknowledged that it was conceivable that the individuals mentioned by the embassy as having been killed might possess dual South African-Israeli citizenship.
