Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces on Saturday accused Sudanese army and its “extremist backers” of intentionally destroying a crucial bridge linking the cities of Omdurman and Bahri.
RSF said that individuals serving as “mouthpieces” for the former regime had been promoting the destruction of the Shambat Bridge to impede the movement of their forces from western Sudan to Khartoum.
“Following the demolition of the Gaili Oil Refinery yesterday and other public facilities, the calculated destruction of the Shambat Bridge is the latest war crime executed by the SAF in collaboration with its extremist patrons from the former regime,” the group said in a statement on X.
“Hand-in-hand with the people of Sudan, we will build new bridges and old bridges anew – both physical and spiritual alike – to bring to fruition their aspirations for democracy, peace, justice, and inclusivity,” RSF added.
Sudanese army denied the accusations and blamed RSF for blowing up the bridge.
The war erupted between the Sudanese army and the RSF in mid-April, resulting in over 9,000 deaths and nearly 6 million internally and externally displaced individuals, according to the United Nations.
