
South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir has dismissed the police chief as part of a broader action against security officials in response to reports of an attempted coup.
Prominent security figures downplayed the coup rumors that surfaced over the weekend while Mr. Kiir was on an official visit to Riyadh for a summit.
Local media reported the following day that 27 military and intelligence officials had been apprehended.
South Sudan is scheduled to conduct its initial election next year since achieving independence in 2011.
A five-year civil war concluded with a peace agreement in 2018, yet the full implementation of the accord is pending, leaving the country in a precarious and fragile state.
