Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo has called upon African and Caribbean leaders to come together and jointly demand reparations for the historical injustices stemming from slavery and colonialism.
He highlighted that countries involved in slavery owed reparations to Africa, emphasizing that the practice significantly hindered Africa’s advancement.
“No amount of money can restore the damage caused by the transatlantic slave trade and its consequences. But surely, this is a matter that the world must confront and can no longer ignore,” Mr Akufo-Addo said on Tuesday at an ongoing reparations conference in Ghana’s capital, Accra, and attended by leaders from African and Caribbean nations.
The conference aims to create a cohesive alliance and develop a strategy to steer African nations and the diaspora towards seeking reparations.
Mr. Akufo-Addo has been outspoken in advocating for apologies and reparations from nations involved in slavery and colonialism.
During September’s United Nations General Assembly, he emphasized that while no sum of money could compensate for the atrocities, reparations would underscore the acknowledgment of the evil perpetrated.
