Sudan’s acting Foreign Minister Ali Sadeq urged the United Nations on Thursday, in a letter seen by Reuters, to “immediately terminate” the UN political mission in the country (UNITAMS) as per reports submitted to the UN Security Council.
In a letter addressed to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and circulated to the UN Security Council, Sudan’s government formally requested the immediate termination of the UNITAMS mission. Concurrently, Ali Sadeq affirmed the Sudanese government’s commitment to engaging constructively with the Security Council and the Secretariat.
“The purpose of establishing the mission (was) to assist the transitional government of Sudan after the December 2018 revolution,” he wrote, adding that the mission’s performance in implementing its objectives “was disappointing.”
Regarding Sudan’s decision, Guterres’ spokesperson Stephane Dujarric confirmed the receipt of the letter and its circulation among the Security Council when asked about Sudan’s stance.
On April 15, a conflict broke out between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces following escalating tension for weeks. The dispute primarily centered around a proposal to integrate forces as part of the transition from military governance to civilian democracy.
The UN special envoy to Sudan declared his resignation in September, more than three months after Sudan declared him unwelcome due to internal disputes between rival factions that escalated into conflict.
