Overloaded truck crash in Nigeria kills at least 25 people

In a devastating incident in Nigeria’s Niger state, a truck transporting passengers to Lagos from Sokoto state lost control on a busy expressway, resulting in the deaths of 25 individuals.

Reports from the federal road safety agency revealed that the vehicle was excessively speeding and overloaded with both passengers and cargo.

The crash occurred on Tuesday night, with more than 200 survivors sustaining severe injuries.

Although the accident happened on Tuesday, authorities confirmed the tragic event on Wednesday. President Bola Tinubu expressed deep sorrow over the incident, labeling it a “harrowing tragedy.” He has directed emergency response agencies to provide essential treatment to the injured survivors.

Governor Mohammed Bago of Niger state swiftly responded by issuing a directive prohibiting the use of trucks and other haulage vehicles for passenger transportation, aiming to prevent such tragic accidents in the future.

It’s worth noting that road accidents due to speeding and overloading are unfortunately common occurrences in Nigeria, as highlighted by this distressing incident.
