The South Korean Foreign Ministry confirmed the safe release of two citizens who were abducted earlier this month in Nigeria. The abduction occurred when assailants ambushed their convoy in the oil-rich Niger Delta region on December 12, resulting in the deaths of four soldiers guarding the group and two civilian drivers.
“On Friday, we secured custody of the two abducted Korean citizens,” the ministry said in a statement.
“Both people are currently in good health, and after a hospital checkup, they moved to a safe area and spoke with their families.”
Incidents of violence by militants in the Niger Delta have notably decreased in recent years. Nonetheless, the area remains prone to volatility, plagued by issues such as crude oil theft and the frequent vandalism of pipelines, significantly impacting Nigeria’s oil production output.
