Egypt vows backing for Somalia amidst conflict with Ethiopia

A recent agreement signed by Ethiopia to utilize one of Somaliland’s seaports has sparked strong criticism from Somalia. The move, denounced by Somalia as an act of “aggression” and a violation of its sovereignty, has further escalated tensions between the two nations.

Somalia maintains that Somaliland is an integral part of its territory, despite Somaliland’s declaration of independence in 1991, which has yet to receive international recognition.

Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi pledged unequivocal support for Somalia in a phone call with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. According to Ahmed Famy, Mr. Sisi’s spokesman, Egypt assured Somalia of its steadfast commitment to stand by the country and ensure its security and stability. Additionally, the leaders discussed “regional developments” and bilateral relations during their conversation.

President Mohamud also engaged in discussions with the Emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad, focusing on matters of mutual interest in bilateral and regional relations, as stated by the Somalia presidency.

The European Union bloc has criticized the recent agreement, emphasizing the importance of respecting Somalia’s “unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity” for the overall peace and stability of the Horn of Africa region, as highlighted in a statement released by the EU.
