16th FNTP unveils diverse Algerian theatre delights

Theatre enthusiasts in Algiers have much to celebrate this December as the 16th National Festival of Professional Theatre (FNTP) prepares to enthrall audiences with a diverse and captivating program. Running from December 22nd to 31st, the festival promises a vibrant showcase of Algerian theatrical talent, with 13 competition plays, captivating performances, and insightful discussions.

This year’s FNTP honors the legacy of Algerian theatre icon Sid Ahmed Agoumi. The festival’s main stage, the Mahieddine-Bachtarzi National Theatre (TNA), will host the opening performance, “Ichou” by the Biskra Regional Theatre. The competition itself boasts an impressive lineup of 13 captivating plays, meticulously chosen from 16 submissions.

Audiences can expect a rich tapestry of theatrical styles and themes. Original creations like “Istirahet el mouharidjine” (The intermission of the clowns) by the Constantine Regional Theatre, “El Mouhtached” (The camps) by the Souk Ahras Regional Theatre, and “Taht El hissar” (Under the headquarters) by the Skikda Regional Theatre promise to spark thought and conversation. Productions celebrating Algeria’s 60th anniversary of independence, including “Sefar” and “Africa,” add a layer of historical reflection to the festival.

The FNTP extends beyond the competitive arena. The Théâtre communal d’Alger-centre will host “out-of-competition” shows, offering a broader perspective on Algerian theatre. Thematic conferences and meetings on criticism, staging, and direction provide valuable learning opportunities for theatre enthusiasts and professionals alike.

The festival pays homage to the late actor Ali Sellali, known as Allalou, through a special event featuring renowned academic and theatre critic Ahmed Cheniki. This tribute promises to be a poignant celebration of Sellali’s contributions to Algerian theatre.

Accessibility is a key concern for the FNTP organizers. Recognizing the financial constraints that families may face, the festival is considering reducing ticket prices from last year’s 500 DA to a more affordable 300 DA. Additionally, a limit of two tickets per family purchase ensures equitable access to the festival’s offerings.

The 16th FNTP promises an unforgettable experience, immersing audiences in the vibrant world of Algerian theatre. From captivating competition plays to insightful discussions and heartwarming tributes, the festival celebrates artistic excellence, fosters cultural exchange, and reaffirms the power of theatre to entertain, inspire, and connect.
