20 civilians killed in ongoing fighting in Ethiopia’s Amhara

At least 20 civilians were killed in northern Ethiopia due to intense fighting between government forces and the Fano militia.

The ongoing clashes near the city of Gonder in the Amhara region have involved heavy artillery, according to local reports.

Residents have been displaced as violence escalates between the Ethiopian National Defense Forces (ENDF) and the militia.

The ENDF had vowed last week to continue “law enforcement operations” in the region until peace is fully restored.

Col. Getenet Adane, the ENDF’s public relations director, emphasized that militia forces are challenging the military’s authority.

In a televised statement, Adane warned that attempts at peaceful dialogue with the militia had failed.

He stated that the government is committed to ensuring any political power is obtained through democratic means.

The fighting between Fano militia and government forces reignited last year, following the end of the conflict with Tigray rebels to the north.

The situation in the Amhara region remains tense, with no immediate signs of resolution.
