State media reported a devastating crash on an Egyptian highway on Saturday, resulting in the loss of at least 35 lives and leaving over 50 individuals injured.
Egypt experiences frequent traffic accidents due to poorly maintained roads and widespread non-compliance with traffic regulations.
“A horrific collision on the Cairo-Alexandria desert road near Wadi al-Natrun led to the death of 35 people, at least 18 of whom burnt to death,” said Al-Ahram news website, indicating “at least 53 were injured”.
Images shared on social media depicted a flipped-over truck obstructing the fast lane on scorched asphalt.
Continuing down the road, there is at least one bus and a minibus, both extensively charred by the fire, along with numerous cars, some of which are still engulfed in flames.
Groups of onlookers stand along the roadside, observing the accident scene, while lines of vehicles form as thick, black smoke billows into the sky.
Official statistics indicate that in 2021, 7,000 individuals lost their lives in road accidents in Egypt, the most populous country in the Arab world.
