African nations decry assaults as unrest grips eastern Congo

African countries have condemned attacks on diplomatic missions in Congo’s capital as M23 rebels advanced in Goma.

Protesters targeted embassies from France, the US, and several African nations, accusing them of supporting Rwanda, alleged backers of the M23 rebels.

Kinshasa claimed Rwandan forces were involved in the rebels’ takeover of Goma. Footage showed the Rwandan Embassy set ablaze, though no diplomats were harmed.

Kenya condemned the attack, calling it a violation of international law, while Rwanda’s ambassador to the region decried the destruction as a failure of Congolese governance.

The M23 rebels intensified their fight for Goma, a city rich in strategic resources.

Fighting has left 25 dead in Goma and nine in Rwanda, with hundreds injured.

South Africa also condemned attacks on peacekeepers, highlighting the ongoing threat to stability in the region.

The M23 rebels, claiming grievances over discrimination against Tutsi communities, are seeking control of the region’s valuable resources and strategic leverage.
