An aerial bombardment claimed the lives of at least nine individuals, including seven children, at a displacement camp in Goma, a city in eastern Congo, as reported by a local official on Friday.
The responsible party behind the airstrike remains uncertain. Over the past two years, the M23 rebel group, backed by Rwanda, has advanced closer to Goma, resulting in a surge of displaced individuals seeking safety within the city’s confines.
Dedesi Mitima, the administrator of the Lac Vert district where the strike took place, informed media that he personally witnessed the tragic aftermath, with the bodies of seven children and two men among the casualties.
Mitima further disclosed that several others sustained injuries, suggesting that the death toll may yet escalate.
At the time of reporting, the Congolese army had not provided any official response or comment regarding the incident.
