Al-Shabaab kills six Kenyan traders in border town

Six Kenyan traders were tragically shot dead by suspected al-Shabaab militants on Friday in the border town of Dhobley, located near Garissa County in Kenya. The attack comes amid ongoing tensions between Kenya and the Somalia-based terrorist group.

Dhobley, situated roughly 562 kilometers southeast of Nairobi, lies on a porous border frequently exploited by al-Shabaab. Garissa County police chief John Samburumo confirmed the incident and reported increased security measures in the area. The bodies of the victims are being transported to Garissa town for identification.

Local authorities believe the perpetrators escaped towards Somalia. This attack reflects a pattern of violence by al-Shabaab in retaliation for Kenya’s troop deployment to Somalia in 2011 to combat terrorism and border threats.

Kenya’s involvement in Somalia has unfortunately made it a target for al-Shabaab’s attacks. The deadliest such attack occurred in April 2015 at Garissa University College, where over 140 students were killed.

This latest incident underscores the ongoing security challenges along the Kenya-Somalia border and the persistent threat posed by al-Shabaab.
