Algeria to supply fuel to Lebanon amid power crisis

Algeria has announced it will commence immediate fuel deliveries to Lebanon for its power stations, according to a statement from Algerian state radio on Sunday. This decision comes after Lebanon’s electricity company reported on Saturday that its fuel reserves had been completely depleted.

Lebanon has struggled with unreliable electricity since the 1990s, with its state electricity provider, Electricité du Liban (EDL), facing chronic financial losses. These losses have significantly contributed to Lebanon’s massive public debt, with cash transfers to EDL amounting to tens of billions of dollars.

On Saturday, EDL declared a nationwide power outage that impacted essential services, including the airport. The company indicated that power would be restored gradually once new fuel supplies are secured, which could come through a swap agreement with Iraq or alternative sources.

Details of the Algerian fuel supply agreement were not disclosed in the statement.
