Algeria’s constitutional court has confirmed that President Abdelmadjid Tebboune secured a second term in office, winning 84.30% of the vote in the election held on Sept. 7, state media reported on Saturday.
The final voter turnout was recorded at 46.10%, according to state media.
The campaign of Tebboune’s main rival, Abdelaali Hassani Cherif, had raised concerns about irregularities in the vote count. Despite these claims, Tebboune, who is supported by Algeria’s military, faced limited opposition from Hassani Cherif, a moderate Islamist, and Youcef Aouchiche, a moderate secularist. Both opposition candidates had the backing of the country’s powerful establishment.
Hassani Cherif garnered 9.56% of the vote, while Aouchiche received 6.14%, state media reported.
