Amnesty International condemns Mali’s lethal drone attacks

Amnesty International has called on Mali’s ruling junta to investigate the killing of eight civilians, including children, in drone strikes.

The strikes occurred on October 21 in Inadiatafane, Timbuktu region, where the Malian army is battling jihadist insurgents and separatists.

Witnesses reported that at least eight civilians, six of whom were children, died while visiting a busy market during the attacks.

Additionally, at least 15 others were injured, with some in critical condition. “The victims were mainly people buying, selling, or moving around,” Amnesty stated, quoting an eyewitness.

Among the dead were a four-month-old baby and a six-year-old girl, underscoring the tragedy of the incident.

The Malian government has not responded to requests for comment. Frequently accused of harming civilians, officials defend their military operations.

“This strike should be investigated as a war crime,” Amnesty asserted, highlighting the targeted nature of the attack on non-combatants.
