Angola boat sinks, killing six

At least six people, including two children, were killed in a tragic boat accident off the coast of Angola. The incident occurred on Saturday, when a boat carrying over 30 people sank near the Island of Luanda, just two miles from the city’s shoreline.

The victims were part of a Catholic maritime procession, a popular event in the southern African nation. Rescue teams worked tirelessly through Sunday and Monday, recovering 17 survivors. Four individuals remain in critical condition in local hospitals, while three others are still missing.

According to police spokesperson Hermenio Cazucuto, the cause of the accident remains unclear. However, authorities have suggested that the captain’s negligence could have played a role. The captain has since gone missing, complicating the investigation.

Maina Panzu, spokesperson for the fire emergency services, confirmed that two of the victims were young children, ages four and six. Local media reports indicate that the boat may have been overcrowded, which could have contributed to the sinking. Additionally, the accident occurred in an area known for rough waters and strong waves.

Angola’s President, Joao Lourenco, expressed his condolences to the families of the victims. In a statement, he said the government would continue to support the rescue efforts and investigate the cause of this heartbreaking incident. Rescue operations are still ongoing as authorities search for the missing individuals.
