Arab League convenes emergency session on Israel’s Gaza war

Arab League has called for an emergency meeting on Wednesday to address the ongoing deadly offensive by Israel in the Gaza Strip, as announced by a Palestinian diplomat.

Muhannad al-Aklouk, the Palestinian delegate to the Arab League, stated that the meeting will specifically focus on Israel’s genocidal war, the recent discovery of mass graves in Gaza, and the US veto against a Palestinian application for full UN membership.

Amidst the escalating crisis, Gaza’s civil defense agency reported the grim discovery of at least 283 bodies in a mass grave at Nasser Hospital in the southern city of Khan Younis.

This revelation came after the Israeli army withdrew from the area following a 4-month ground offensive, adding to the mounting casualties from the conflict.

The diplomatic tensions further intensified last week when the US exercised its veto power to block a draft resolution in the UN Security Council seeking to grant Palestine full membership in the United Nations.

These events have prompted Palestine to convene Wednesday’s urgent meeting to address the Israeli attacks in Gaza and the occupied West Bank.

The conflict traces back to an Oct. 7 cross-border attack by ASD, resulting in the loss of nearly 1,200 lives.

Since then, the violence has taken a devastating toll, with nearly 34,200 Palestinians killed and over 77,000 others injured.

The region is reeling from mass destruction and severe shortages of essential supplies.

As the Israeli military offensive enters its 200th day, the situation has forced 85% of Gaza’s population into internal displacement.

The lack of access to food, clean water, and medicine remains a critical concern, exacerbated by the destruction of 60% of the enclave’s infrastructure, as reported by the UN.

In a significant development, Israel is facing accusations of genocide at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

In January, the ICJ issued an interim ruling demanding Tel Aviv to cease genocidal acts and ensure the provision of humanitarian assistance to civilians in Gaza.

The upcoming Arab League meeting is expected to address these pressing issues and explore avenues for diplomatic intervention in the conflict.
