Arrests of political leaders in Mali condemned by alliance

An alliance of political parties and civil society groups in Mali, led by a junta since a 2020 coup, reported that several leaders were arrested on Thursday during a private meeting at a former minister’s house.

They are demanding their immediate release.

In April, the junta issued a decree restricting political activities to maintain public order.

Boubacar Toure, a party representative, told media that 11 people, mainly political leaders, were detained.

The alliance condemned the arrests as unconstitutional and accused the authorities of moving toward dictatorship to retain power and silence democratic voices.

The junta has suspended all political activities after the group criticized the delay in scheduled elections. An appeal has been made to the Malian Supreme Court, but a hearing date is not yet known. The authorities have not commented on the arrests.
