A bus accident in Ethiopia’s Oromiya region has left at least 26 people dead, with 42 others injured, according to state-affiliated Fana Broadcasting.
The bus was en route from Shambu, in western Ethiopia, to the capital, Addis Ababa, when it overturned, East Wollega Zone traffic safety inspector Asnake Mesfin told Fana. He warned that the death toll could rise.
Fatal road accidents are frequent in Ethiopia, where poor driving conditions and poorly maintained vehicles contribute to high casualty rates. In December, at least 71 people died in the southern Sidama region after a truck carrying passengers veered off the road and plunged into a river.
