At least 70 killed in fuel tanker explosion in central Nigeria

At least 70 people were killed in central Nigeria on Saturday when a fuel tanker exploded after flipping over.

The incident occurred at the Dikko junction on the road connecting Abuja to Kaduna. A large crowd had gathered to collect fuel from the overturned tanker, leading to the tragic explosion.

The rising cost of fuel, exacerbated by the recent removal of fuel subsidies, has driven many Nigerians to resort to dangerous practices such as collecting fuel from accident sites.

This incident comes on the heels of a similar tragedy in October 2024, where over 170 people lost their lives in a fuel tanker explosion in Jigawa State.

The Nigerian government has expressed deep concern over the rising number of such incidents and is urging the public to exercise caution and avoid approaching accident sites involving fuel tankers.
