The African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) announced the killing of over 50 al-Shabaab militants. The joint operation with Somali forces took place Sunday in Bariire, a key town in Lower Shabelle. Many insurgents also sustained serious injuries, the AU mission confirmed in a statement.
El Hadji Ibrahima Diene, the AU Commission Chairperson’s special representative for Somalia, reaffirmed their resolve. “AUSSOM and Somali National Army forces are determined to recapture Bariire and other territories held by al-Shabaab,” he said.
Their goal is to restore lasting peace and security for Somalia’s people. The mission dismissed reports of heavy casualties among its troops during the offensive.
Bariire, located 73 kilometers southwest of Mogadishu, is a strategic agricultural hub. For over 16 years, al-Shabaab has waged a brutal insurgency against the Somali government.
The group frequently targets security forces, government officials, and civilians in its violent campaign. This operation marks a significant push to reclaim territory from the insurgents.
The struggle for control over Bariire underscores the ongoing battle for stability in Somalia. With determination and coordinated force, AU and Somali troops aim to weaken al-Shabaab’s grip.
Their fight continues amid a complex backdrop of conflict and hardship for the region’s people. The success of this mission could shape Somalia’s future path toward peace and security.
